Flames erupted from the 5800 block of Lindbergh Boulevard early Monday, prompting the PSPCA’s Animal Law Enforcement team to respond. Upon arrival, officers found the makeshift stables had burned to the ground, displacing multiple animals, including a goat and a pig, the agency said.

"Heartbreakingly, two of the horses didn’t survive. But, the 12 that did are now in our care," the PSPCA stated.

The three most critically injured horses were transported to the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center for emergency treatment. Three others were taken to PSPCA’s Philadelphia headquarters, while the remaining six were split between Montgomery County SPCA’s Perkiomenville Shelter and Last Chance Ranch’s Quakertown facility. They will ultimately be relocated to PSPCA’s Danville Center, officials said.

Meanwhile, the pig and goat rescued from the fire are being cared for at ACCT Philly.

The PSPCA has launched an investigation to determine if cruelty or neglect played a role in the conditions leading up to the fire. Forensic evidence will be collected from the rescued horses, and authorities urge anyone with information about their ownership to call the PSPCA cruelty hotline at 866-601-7722 or email cruelty@pspca.org.

“The trauma these animals have endured is unimaginable, and their road to recovery will be long and difficult,” the PSPCA said in a statement. “They will need urgent medical care, shelter, and support.”

A fundraiser to assist with the horses’ medical care has been launched, with donations being accepted through the PSPCA’s official channels.
